Designing for Humans and Algorithms

I recently came across a LinkedIn post suggesting that we should deprioritize designing for humans and instead adopt an AI-first approach in our web design strategies. As someone who values user-centered design, this perspective sparked my curiosity to explore the topic more deeply.

The way people discover and consume content online is changing quickly. For years, we focused on creating websites with beautiful layouts, seamless navigation, and compelling copy designed to engage human visitors and guide them toward conversion. Those principles still matter, but in 2025 we face a new reality: the first audience to encounter our content may not be human at all. It may be an algorithm.

That realization led me to the concept of the Dual Web, a growing design philosophy that recognizes websites today have two distinct audiences: humans and algorithms. While people experience websites visually and emotionally, AI systems experience them structurally and semantically. The most successful modern websites speak fluently to both.

The Rise of the Dual Web

We are witnessing a shift toward what digital strategists now call the “Dual Web,” a landscape where every website must serve two simultaneous audiences.

One audience engages through interaction and emotion: the human visitor who scrolls, clicks, reads, and feels. The other, an AI model, interprets your content through markup, structure, and metadata.

Just as accessibility standards expanded our understanding of good design, AI legibility will become another pillar of digital literacy. Designers will soon be judged not only by how their interfaces look and feel but also by how accurately AI can understand and represent their content.

Ultimately, the Dual Web mindset ensures that our digital work remains discoverable, interpretable, and meaningful, whether the reader is human or algorithmic.

The web’s next evolution is not about replacing human-centered design. It is about expanding it to include a new audience: the intelligent systems that now mediate how people experience the internet.
