As Artificial Intelligence (AI) evolves from novelty to necessity, it’s shaping not just what we build, but how we approach building. Whether you’re planning a new project or exploring possibilities, AI offers exciting opportunities to innovate.

From writing support content to making data-driven decisions, AI tools are appearing in more projects for good reason—they’re capable, fast, and increasingly accessible.

However, as useful as AI can be, it’s still an evolving technology that requires thoughtful implementation. The more we use AI, the more we need to consider its human impact—not just its capabilities, but how it functions and who it affects.

Here are five important ethical considerations to guide you when incorporating AI into your project. These aren’t reasons to avoid AI, but key principles for using it responsibly as the technology continues to mature.

1. Bias and Discrimination: AI Learns From Us—Flaws Included

Since AI models learn from real-world data, they can reflect real-world inequalities. This might result in an AI system making biased recommendations that you didn’t intend based on race, gender, or other sensitive characteristics. While many teams are working to address these challenges, bias requires attention from the very beginning of any AI project.

Mishandling data by collecting too much, failing to secure it, or using it without proper consent can quickly erode public confidence. With data breaches and privacy concerns becoming more mainstream, users are more skeptical of sharing their data. Prioritizing privacy gives a competitive advantage that helps you stay ahead of strengthening regulations, avoid damage to your reputation, and earn people’s loyalty.

3. Safety and Reliability: Expect the Unexpected

While these errors are often minor, in public-facing or sensitive settings they can cause confusion or harm. That’s why carefully reviewing AI outputs and having a plan for handling mistakes is crucial.

When AI makes mistakes, consequences can range from wasting people’s time and creating frustration to potentially causing financial loss or even breaching privacy. If users can’t rely on your system, not only will they suffer these impacts, but your organization might face backlash. Planning for errors, testing unusual scenarios, and including human oversight are essential steps in designing for resilience. A safe, stable system builds long-term credibility and reduces operational risks.

  • Test your system thoroughly, including edge cases and less common scenarios.
  • Build in ways for people to give feedback or report unexpected behavior.
